Carpal tunnel decompression is a surgical procedure used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, a common condition caused by compression of the median nerve at the level of the wrist.

The carpal tunnel is a narrow canal located at the wrist level, through which the median nerve and the flexor tendons of the fingers pass. When pressure in this space increases, the median nerve can be compressed, which causes the appearance of characteristic symptoms.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can manifest through:

  • numbness or tingling at the level of the fingers
  • pain at the level of the hand or wrist
  • weakness in grasping objects
  • sensation of burning or discomfort at the level of the hand

The carpal tunnel decompression procedure consists of sectioning the transverse carpal ligament, which allows release of pressure on the median nerve and restoration of its normal function.

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, being a minor surgery that is performed safely.

Carpal tunnel decompression offers several benefits:

  • improvement of pain and tingling
  • reduction of pressure on the median nerve
  • improvement of hand function
  • prevention of symptom worsening

The duration of the procedure is generally 20–40 minutes, and recovery depends on the severity of the condition and the particularities of each patient.

After the procedure, the doctor provides recommendations regarding postoperative care and gradual resumption of daily activities.
