Excision of subcutaneous formations (lipoma)

Details

About this specialty

Lipoma excision is a surgical procedure used to remove a lipoma, a benign formation composed of adipose tissue. Lipomas appear frequently under the skin, develop slowly, and are most often painless. However, in certain situations they can cause discomfort, increase in size, or affect the aesthetic appearance of the area.

Surgical excision is the standard treatment method for lipoma, as it allows complete removal of the formation, reducing the risk of recurrence.

When lipoma excision is recommended

The procedure may be indicated when:

  • the lipoma increases in size
  • there is discomfort or local pressure
  • the formation becomes painful or inflamed
  • the lipoma is located in a visible area and causes aesthetic discomfort
  • there is a need for diagnostic confirmation

How the procedure is performed

The intervention is usually performed under local anesthesia, under sterile conditions. The physician makes an incision at the skin level and completely removes the lipoma together with its capsule. After excision, the wound is closed with sutures to allow proper healing.

In some cases, the excised tissue may be sent for histopathological examination, to confirm the benign nature of the formation.

Recovery

Recovery after lipoma excision is generally rapid. Patients can resume daily activities in a short time, following medical recommendations regarding wound care and presenting for follow-up to remove sutures if necessary.
